The Caramel Crisp Bookstore discusses The Serviceberry
Thursday, April 24th at 5:30 pm
In honor of Earth Day, 2025, The Caramel Crisp Book Store will be hosting a book club meeting featuring "The Serviceberry" by Robin Wall Kimmerer, author of the bestselling "Braiding Sweet grass". If you would like to purchase a copy of this book for 10% off the cover price, you may pre-order "The Serviceberry" through The Caramel Crisp Bookstore. As Indigenous scientist and author of Braiding Sweetgrass Robin Wall Kimmerer harvests serviceberries alongside the birds, she considers the ethic of reciprocity that lies at the heart of the gift economy. How, she asks, can we learn from Indigenous wisdom and the plant world to reimagine what we value most? Our economy is rooted in scarcity, competition, and the hoarding of resources, and we have surrendered our values to a system that actively harms what we love. Meanwhile, the serviceberry’s relationship with the natural world is an embodiment of reciprocity, interconnectedness, and gratitude. The tree distributes its wealth—its abundance of sweet, juicy berries—to meet the needs of its natural community. And this distribution ensures its own survival. As Kimmerer explains, “Serviceberries show us another model, one based upon reciprocity, where wealth comes from the quality of your relationships, not from the illusion of self-sufficiency.”

Wisconsin Poet Laureate Dasha Kelly Hamilton at Caramel Crisp Bookstore
Thursday, May 8th at 5:30 PM
The Caramel Crisp Bookstore is honored to be hosting Wisconsin Poet Laureate Dasha Kelly Hamilton on Thursday, May 8th, as she showcases her exciting statewide poetry project, “A Line Meant”!
This unique workshop event is an evening of curation, creation and poetic conversation with Dasha and other Wisconsin poets.
“A Line Meant” is an anthology of poetry from across Wisconsin, from established poets to farmers, retirees, inmates and more. Starting with a single line of existing poetry, participants not only crafted their own unique works, but also shared their poems and insights as a form of connective tissue with one another. Like a tree from many roots, “A Line Meant” threads together both the professional and the hobbyist poet, growing new, powerful art from the margins between.
Those who attend this amazing event can look forward to a micro writing workshop, a brief talk from Dasha about the “A Line Meant” project and conversations with and readings by anthology contributors. Attendees will be able to purchase copies of this inaugural edition of the collection and will also have the opportunity to create writings of their own to upload for follow-up editions of the anthology.
This event is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to meet and talk with Wisconsin poets and to share your own work with them. The folks at the Caramel Crisp Bookstore can’t wait to be a part of this exciting celebration of the arts in Wisconsin!
There is no cost to attend this event, but interested people are encouraged to indicate their planned attendance on the “A Line Meant” Facebook event page so that the Caramel Crisp Bookstore staff can prepare.
